Product Certification: Unified Threat Management

In Q3 of 2008, NSS Labs performed comprehensive testing of the IBM ISS Proventia MX3006 appliance against our Unified Threat Management (UTM) testing methodology. This report contains the conclusions and associated data from a series of exacting tests performed on a device installed in our real-world test lab. This NSS Labs report provides readers with empirically validated evidence about a product's features and capabilities.

The MX3006 breezed through NSS Labs' UTM certification, successfully passing 160 of 161 test requirements. The MX3006 blocked 94.2% of the 396 exploits targeting a wide range of target systems and protected against 95.6% of the tested malware.

Product Report on PCI Suitability for UTMs
April 2008

The IBM Proventia MX1004, MX3006, and MX5010 are some of the first products to undergo the NSS Labs Product Report on PCI Suitability for UTMs. In Q1 of 2008, NSS Labs performed comprehensive testing of these appliances as Unified Threat Management (UTM) for use in payment card environments. This report contains the conclusions and associated data from a series of exacting tests performed on devices installed in our real-world test lab.

Support for PCI DSS requirements was very impressive. NSS Labs found that the Proventia appliances successfully passed 58 DSS requirements, and supported 59 others indirectly with no failures. Overall, out of 117 tested requirements, the products support 100%. Recommended configurations are also provided in the reports.

Basic Interoperability and AES Interoperability

The Proventia integrated security appliance is VPNC Certified for VPN Basic Interoperability and AES Interoperability. VPNC is the international trade association for manufacturers in the VPN market.

The Basic Interoperability test assures VPN users that IPsec systems are generally interoperable with other IPsec systems. The AES Interoperability test assures VPN users that IPsec systems are generally interoperable with other IPsec systems when using the new AES encryption algorithm.

The NSS UTM test sees the launch of a brand new methodology which evaluates the performance, reliability, security effectiveness, and usability of UTM products. The testing covers the seven main security modules typically included in UTM products: Firewall, VPN, IDS/IPS, Anti Virus, Anti Spam, URL Filtering, and Content Filtering."  The ISS Proventia M50, firmware version 3.2 was certified "approved" in 2005.
