Case study Company name: Manitoulin Transport
Major Canadian Transport company, Manitoulin Transport, revolutionizes its shipping and truck tracking processes when it replaces a largely manual system with an automated tracking and alert-generating system on large video display terminals, implemented by IBM Global Business Services. |

Business need | While Manitoulin Transport had grown significantly over the years, the method with which the company tracked its vehicles and shipments could not. The Legacy tracking system was essentially a room-sized Lego board on a 42' X 8' wall. Planning and monitoring were done manually with many tactile interactions. Manitoulin knew that this system was inefficient and subject to error, and it sought a partner to help it develop and implement a new tracking system that would automatically take status updates from the company's backend systems and present that information on a video display. |
Solution | Manitoulin designed the business architecture and selected IBM Global Business Services to provide usability modeling and the technical requirements for the new tracking solution. IBM then led the implementation of the "Power View" solution, which includes application technology from 3G Touch Solutions and Garo Consulting. Power View takes the status data from the company's backend systems and displays it on a very large (approx. 20'' x 6') video display. Other information, such as route planning and driver availability will be added as the project progresses. |
Results Expected benefits from the program include: · Training time on the new system reduced by 60% · Proactive system will help the company change the way it manages its fleet and provides service to customers · Identifies potential problems with shipments (weather, traffic delays, etc.) and allows Manitoulin to work around them · Unlike the Lego board, it can grow and expand to include more routes, trucks and possibly even a different kind of business model, such as local shipments in other locations, for the company |
Customer testimonial | “This system truly transforms the way Manitoulin works. While the legacy board served us well, the modern demands of the customers, suppliers and the industry required a new responsive model. Overall, the solution improves safety and service for Manitoulin.” Tim Lalonde, Director of IT, Manitoulin Transport |
Customer information | Manitoulin Transport | | Manitoulin Transport started out as a local shipping service on Manitoulin Island, in Ontario. Over the years, as it acquired shipping companies, it continued to expand its service area. Through the years, Manitoulin Transport has slowly grown to what it is today - Canada's largest freight management provider, with more Direct Canadian service points than any other LTL carrier in North America. |
