Business need
Industry studies show that compensation paid for automobile accident claims is too high about 70 percent of the time. Traditionally, monitoring auto insurance claims has required manual inspection and is performed only selectively since mass claims validation has been too costly. By automating the process, eucon saw a way of expanding its validation service to a much larger number of insurance companies.

Solution
IBM Global Business Services helped eucon design and implement a system, named "Check-it," which automates most of the digitizing of claims documents, then extracts and structures the data, analyzes the cost of items in the claim and produces an exception report highlighting cost items that seem out of line. The hardware and software infrastructure for providing the new service is provided by IBM on a variable basis, allowing eucon to price this offering to its customers using a flexible transaction-based pricing model.

Results

The key benefits are as follows:

  • Removal of the manual entry bottleneck allows eucon to accept new customers and return results within demanding turnaround times. The system can automatically extract 80 percent of the data from scanned input documents
  • The cost to eucon of digitizing and structuring the data of an average claim, formerly about €5 each, is reduced by about 75 percent
  • Errors in submitted estimates are detected due to line-item validation with existing data tables
  • Several new customers have already contracted for the new service
  • Flexible function allows eucon to optionally offer outsourcing/out-tasking to potentially include a complete damage claim processing service
  • The estimated savings potential for reducing the cost of a claim amount is about €170 each.
