Case study Company name: Association for Payment Clearing Services
APACS in the U.K. successfully coordinates efforts with banks and the U.K. retail industry to implement a massive, three-year national credit and debit card security improvement program, thanks to the project management expertise of IBM Global Business Services. |

Business need APACS launched a national Chip and PIN program across the UK to improve credit and debit card security - a massive initiative that would involve not only APACS but all banks in the UK, the entire retail industry, and support of the British Home Office. The project required a proven world-class program manager to coordinate efforts, manage risks, overcome issues, and to keep communication flowing. |
Solution IBM Global Business Services created and ran the Chip and PIN Programme Management Organization (PMO), an independent advisory body facilitating the transition to the chip and PIN system for both the banking and retail industries. The PMO was responsible for facilitating forums and governance meetings, keeping the public informed, and ensuring the project is on target. |
Results IBM was a key player in protecting the public with improved credit and debit card security. Continuing that tradition, the APACS solution helped provide: · Clearly defined and monitored responsibilities · A ground-breaking, national initiative spanning a variety of industries that stayed on track over a 3-year roll-out |
