Professor Mari Sako from Said Business School on the Human Capital Study
 |
|
A timely report on key strategic issues in human capital management that are (and should be) on the minds of CEOs and Human Resource directors around the world. The comprehensive picture provided by IBM, based on evidence from over 300 organizations worldwide, poses many challenges for CHROs. The report highlights four challenges: first, the difficulty of retaining the human capital focus when organizations are maturing or in decline; second, the trade-off inherent in building vs buying talent in order to achieve flexibility and growth; third, how to retain talent in a fast-moving world when employees have less commitment and loyalty to organizations; and lastly, the general difficulty with making the impact of HRM on business results tangible and visible. IBM provides subtle analysis of how companies in different regions meet these challenges in different ways. The 'no one size fits all' message sets a high hurdle for strategy formulation by global corporations.
