IBM Global Services is launching Linux consulting services in Brazil, and opening a new front in its advocacy of the Linux operating system. IBM Global Services' Open Client Desktop services will help companies plan strategies for switching to Linux-based alternatives, including for desktop PCs, ATMs, kiosks, and point-of-sale terminals.

IBM has already reorganised its software and services groups along industry lines, and will specifically target the retail, government, and financial markets with the new Brazilian service. Brazilian retail chain Casas Bahia already contracted IBM to help install new point-of-sale registers based on the Linux operating system. IBM will support Linux versions from Red Hat, Novell, and Latin American distributor Conectiva.
