IBM and specifically IBM NL has been addressing various aspects of long-term usability of digital information over the past decade. These include solutions focused on ensuring the survival of the bits, as well as the Digital Information Archiving System (DIAS) solution which focuses on the broader issues of long-term digital information usability.
Keeping track of technology innovation and the resulting technology obsolescence is a very important activity to maintain usability of digital information over the long term. For this purpose IBM developed the Preservation Manager which identifies potential usability issues and helps to formulate the appropriate preservation actions to assure future usability of your information.
IBM is one of the worldwide leading technology innovation companies and therefore ideally positioned to address long-term digital preservation.
Long-term information usability is not static but will have to adapt to incorporate new technology innovations and file formats. The CoE supplies a wide range of consulting services to address these type challenges and continously adapts the existing solution to incorporate these new technology innovations.
IBM NL CoE is constantly optimizing its long-term information usability solutions for specific industries. DIAS Library solutions are developed in cooperation with the National Library of the Netherlands , within the German kopal project and multiple or based on other proof-of concepts inside archives.
IBM is also taking an active role in efforts to advance the state of the art in ensuring long-term information usability. IBM’s research centers in Haifa and Guadalajara (US) are constantly investigating on new innovative long-term information usability solutions . Since this issue is not limited to one company or one technology, many of IBM’s efforts are taken as part of broader attempts to address long-term information usability, such as European Union (EU) research efforts (Planets, Caspar, Impact) and file format standardization efforts like the Open Document Format (ODF) and new smart storage interface standards developed by SNIA
The Center of Excellence for Long Term Information Usability will support you in addressing the many emerging challenges introduced by the increased amount of born digital information and the increased compliancy pressures.
