The company considered consolidating hundreds of UNIX® servers onto an IBM  zSeries™ 900 enterprise server running the Linux operating system. Thousands of Linux images can run on the IBM system, making it easier and faster to add new financial workloads to the platform. Solution To evaluate Linux as a consolidation platform, the firm's technical team called on IBM Global Services, which recommended IBM Operational Support Services - Support Line. Linux programming code is highly configurable, and the firm needed to select which functions of the operating system it might need. For example, certain configurations should be selected to enable multiple system images to run at the same time, and required connectivity might vary. Supplementing the firm's technical team, the IBM specialists were able to answer the tough configuration questions as they arose. |
Results The net result is that the firm was able to customize Linux and begin its evaluation of that platform's capabilities. |
Benefits The results have been positive so far, and a phased transition to production mode is planned.
