Local and geographic load balancing

Designed to meet a wide range of client needs, IBM local and geographic load balancing services include a choice of flexible solutions and dedicated device configurations that balance the workload across your Web servers in one or more hosting facilities. Depending on the level of availability you want to achieve, you can choose from a range of local and geographic service options. You can also receive varying levels of IBM support, selecting setup only or both setup and ongoing management services. Solutions extend from basic load balancing to the advanced functionality of content-based routing and the performance enhancement achieved by offloading SSL (secure sockets layer) encryption processing. Clients who have installed local load balancing can easily upgrade to geographic load balancing.

IBM's local and geographic load balancing services are predesigned and pretested, so they can be implemented quickly and cost-effectively on your own or IBM-provided devices. Our load balancing solutions employ technology from Cisco Systems and Nortel/Alteon. High-availability options featuring redundant base components are available for local load balancing services to help eliminate single points of failure.

Managed, virtual load balancing

Managed, virtual load balancing enables you to shift your load balancing workload from dedicated load balancing devices to a virtual service architecture. You gain the same performance and customisation benefits as with your own dedicated devices, but at a cost that may be significantly lower. You pay only for the committed bandwidth you use to access the service.

As your Web traffic increases and you need additional load balancing capacity, you simply increase your committed bandwidth. There are virtually no migration concerns or deployment delays because there is no need to acquire, install or configure load balancing devices. The service is highly scalable and redundant, enabling you to expand your hosting infrastructure quickly and helping you provide an extremely reliable and responsive Web site for end users.

IBM has joined with Akamai Technologies, a market leader in content and application distribution services, to provide Akamai EdgeSuite, EdgeControl and EdgeComputing technology. The service caches Web content in multiple locations and serves that content via the most expedient routes, in real time. Invisible to your end users, these content distribution services are designed to reduce your server load considerably and deliver content to users up to ten times faster than without caching.

By purchasing Akamai services from IBM, you receive the same level of service you would receive if buying directly from Akamai, at the same cost. But you gain convenience, a single point of contact, and the benefit of paying only one monthly invoice. Plus, you have the value-add of IBM expert assistance in preparing your systems for the Akamai service.
