Diana Cheptene

My name is Diana Cheptene and I joined Consulting by Degrees in April 2015. I graduated from McGill University in 2014 with a Bachelors of Commerce, specializing in Global Strategy, Marketing and Entrepreneurship. The IBM Interactive Experience (IBM iX) team seemed like a great fit for me since I had previous experience in running a start-up that developed websites and web applications. So far I’ve been a part of six projects, covering areas from digital and business strategy to web and mobile application design.

I joined the CBD program because I wanted to grow my skills and experience while having strong support from executives and build a network of like-minded, ambitious, young professionals across North America. Since CBD is a rotational program, I’ve been exposed to a variety of industries, such as aerospace, healthcare, telecommunications and oil and gas.

What I love about the program is the ability to take on work that fits with my interests and helps me grow my skills quickly. Also, by working closely with Partners and Associate Partners, I’ve been involved in developing new business opportunities by getting to know our clients and understanding their needs, which is incredibly valuable to me as a consultant.

I’ve also been able to take initiative and add value by contributing to internal IBM projects. In the past few months, a couple of other CBDers and I have identified an opportunity to transform the experience of employees during campus recruitment. We developed a proposal for a solution and pitched our idea to the executives. We’ve been given funding to make it happen!

Currently, I’m the lead user experience designer for a large oil and gas company in Calgary. I led the product design stream for a first-of-a-kind web application focused on optimization and data visualization to drive efficiencies in the oil extraction process. It’s great to work with clients and get this hands-on experience so early in my career.

Laura Germain

My name is Laura Germain and I joined the Consulting by Degrees program as a consultant in the Business Analytics and Strategy service line of IBM in June 2015. After graduating from McGill University with a Bachelor in Chemical Engineering and a minor in Management, I was looking for a high-impact role that was both challenging and rewarding.

During my interview for the CBD position, I was asked why I wanted to join IBM. My answer was and still remains the same – IBM cultivates personal growth, learning and professional development. That is the reason why I am excited to be a part of the CBD community.

Within my first year in the program, I’ve been immersed in exciting projects and have had the opportunity to work with four major clients in the Montreal area. Each project brought a different sets of challenges that allowed me to learn and develop skills in client interactions, data services, project management and digitization, along with business processes around finance and procurement.

Right now, I’m finishing a mandate in digitization for a bank in the Montreal area and working for a global retail and manufacturing company undergoing a major SAP implementation. I’ve gained so much from the program and each day brings new, exciting work. If you enjoy learning and challenging yourself, then the CBD program is for you!

Mariam Ayyoob

My name is Mariam Ayyoob and I joined the CBD program in February 2016. I graduated from the Schulich School of Business at York University in 2015 with a Bachelors of Business Administration. I’m a consultant in IBM Interactive Experience (IBM iX). Our team fuses strategy, data and design to help companies reinvent their customer experience.

I joined the CBD program for the opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects, which I’ve definitely had the chance to do. What I find unique about the CBD program is the opportunity to be in front of the client on day one after training. This allowed me to truly be a part of the project team, develop my professional skills and work alongside IBM consultants with deep industry and client experience.

It’s amazing how much I’ve learned in such a short period of time. In just six months, I’ve been a part of three project teams. The variety in the projects and roles I took on allowed me to quickly learn about IBM’s offerings.

With clients in the telecommunications and financial services industries, I’ve assisted with business analysis, project management, mobile testing and user experience design. I’ve been able to combine my business background with new technical skills that I’ve learned at IBM to provide value as a client-facing consultant.

Tad Chisti

My name is S M Tadmir Bin Chisti, but many choose to keep it just a “tad” bit shorter and call me Tad. I graduated from the University of Waterloo’s Nanotechnology Engineering program in May 2015. Unlike many of my peers, I chose to start my career at the client site instead of the research lab. In June 2015, I interviewed and began my journey as a consultant in IBM Interactive Experience (they also like to keep it a “tad” bit shorter and call themselves IBM iX). It was meant to be!

The CBD program seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to showcase my diverse experience, learn new skills and finally get some use out of my wardrobe of fancy suits. It offered flexibility, the opportunity to travel and access to some of the most advanced technologies in the market. It had everything I needed to build my career.

On the first day, my manager asked me two important questions: what can you do and what do you want to do. I was offered a project manager role on a small internal project. From then on, the trajectory has been exponential. I was soon nominated as the resource staffing manager for our team and also assigned as the project manager on a large, highly complex development project for a mobile app.

Based on my contributions in my practice and on my projects, I received the IBM Manager's Choice Award and a GBS Service Excellence Award. Currently, I’m the program manager at one of our major clients where my fancy suits are really coming in handy!
