About Us

We are here for you.

IBM has made a significant investment into the Canadian Petroleum sector – expanding its local team of experts to add even more leaders from the industry – Chemical Engineers and Engineering Upstream Managers, Oil Sands Operators, Mine and Refinery Managers, Asset Experts, and more – who can help you with your capital projects, operations and maintenance, pipeline management, or research – and help transform your industry with disruptive solutions.

We recognize that Oil and Gas industry, like the financial markets in 2008 and Health Care, requires a step change in terms of your operations, and our technology alone is not going to move you there. This is why we’ve brought in experts to help translate your business problems to our technology teams and likewise, who can translate technology into helping you solve your problems—it works both ways.

A digital transformation is reshaping the Oil and Gas industry

The amount of data generated by the energy industry is growing at a rate that is almost unimaginable to humans. We need help dealing with this information. Yet, only 10% of this vast data is actionable by computers, the rest is “dark”.

How do we gain insights from sensors, pictures, videos, e-mails, Tweets? Imagine tapping into 240 years of geological education in seconds. What if you could read every petroleum technology journal ever published in less time than it takes you to drink a cup of coffee?

Cognitive computing will help us outthink risk, and solve the energy industry’s biggest challenges.

How we can help

Strategic Sourcing

Why it matters?

  • In-house procurement is a crucial function that manages core and non-core spend categories, it is a significant influencer of operational costs, and consequently the bottom line.
  • Innovation Approach: IBM has the expertise to develop an effective sourcing and procurement strategy offering sustainable savings with low risk or disruption to your business and leveraging our proven track record of success.

How is it done?

From how, where, what and when to procure, we leverage the deep expertise of our procurement specialists and implement an analytics based ecosystem that drives efficiencies, lends visibility, and enhances effectiveness through useful insights

Potential Value

  • Derive greater value from existing contracts, consolidate spend and increase competition
  • Improve timelines and quality of reporting by 30%
  • A $5B enterprise can save as much as $100M over a 5-year term

Credentials

  • Sourcing framework leveraging the experience of managing $57B in spend annually
  • Deep expertise in all categories of indirect spend
  • 3,900 practitioners in 63 countries

Social Sentiment Analytics

Why it matters?

  • The ‘right to operate’ is increasingly being influenced by public sentiment making it imperative for petroleum and mining companies to engage in a social strategy to manage their reputation and educate the public.
  • Innovation Approach: IBM’s analysis of social media presence from blogs, forums, videos and other social media sites enables organizations to understand how their company and projects are viewed by the public and vis-à-vis competitors; gaining deep insight into attitudes, opinions and new trends.

How is it done?

  • Identify the conversations to track and listen and monitor.
  • Identify actionable insights with ROI, predict and improve outcomes with dynamic dashboards and modeling. Apply cognitive computing.

Potential Value

  • Educate public on safety and environmental concerns
  • Understand new issues as they emerge and develop timely responses before media attention
  • Adjust your message based on regional concerns
  • Effectively target influencers at the right time and place

Credentials

It is critical that companies understand their key online influencers—positive and negative, political activists, supporters or protesters, and what is their sphere of influence and social networks are. IBM is helping organizations like Accoina, a leader in the development and management of infrastructure, renewable energy, water and services do this today

How we have helped

IBM and Repsol jointly developed two prototype cognitive applications designed to augment strategic decision making in the optimization of oil reservoir production and in the acquisition of new oil fields

IBM helps PotashCorp of Saskatchewan turn a learning content management system into a strategy

Woodside, Australia’s Largest Independent Oil and Gas Company, uses IBM Watson to enhance decision making and increase efficiencies

An Oil and Gas industry producer in Canada improves safety and reliability with insights into equipment failure and preventative maintenance

A Canadian Oil company quickly identifies specific safety risks and interdependencies for all asset-related changes, predicting how each change affects the operations of its production plants to increase safety and reliability

What we are thinking

Cognitive Computing in Oil and Gas

The Oil and Gas industry actively pursues innovation but is challenged by the changing skill sets required, business, technical and regulatory uncertainty, and cost pressures. Cognitive computing helps firms extend beyond these human and current system limitations.

The Well as a Patient

Since 2013 Watson Oncology has helped doctors offer cancer patients individualized treatments.

Today IBM is training Watson to help improve the performance of Oil and Gas wells. The patients are now called wells, the doctors are replaced by engineers, and symptoms manifest themselves as corrosion, scale build-up, pressure loss or increase water production. Training Watson to solve hydrocarbon problems is similar to how we trained the technology to help in the field of oncology.
